When the disciples met Jesus, they were ordinary fishermen. Jesus said follow me and I will make you fishers of men. Acts 4:13- "Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus".
So these people moved from being ordinary fisherman to become relevant people in their society.
